Families Trapped. Homes Destroyed. Lives Washed Away.

For more than a week, relentless monsoon rains have devastated southeastern Bangladesh, unleashing catastrophic flooding and deadly landslides across the region. Entire communities have disappeared beneath floodwaters, leaving families stranded with nowhere to go.

In Chattogram (Chittagong), more than 16 inches of rain fell in a single day the highest daily rainfall recorded there in 43 years. Hillsides have collapsed without warning, rivers have burst their banks, and roads have become raging waterways. Entire districts remain underwater.

The Human Cost

This disaster has already claimed 51 lives, including 16 Rohingya refugees who were killed when landslides tore through the fragile refugee camps of Cox's Bazar. More than 1 million people have been directly affected, with hundreds of thousands of families displaced, isolated, or unable to reach safety.

Many survivors have lost everything.

• Homes have been destroyed or swept away.
• Families are sleeping in overcrowded emergency shelters.
• Children have no access to clean drinking water.
• Food supplies are running dangerously low.
• Roads and bridges have collapsed, making it difficult for aid to reach those in desperate need.

Beyond the Floodwaters

The devastation extends far beyond homes.

More than 110,000 animals, poultry, and livestock have perished, wiping out the livelihoods of thousands of farming families and causing an estimated $2.5 million in agricultural losses. For many rural households, these animals represented years of savings, daily income, and their primary source of food.

Bangladesh's economy has also been brought to a standstill.

Operations at Chattogram Port - one of the country's busiest commercial gateways - have been severely disrupted, with dozens of cargo vessels delayed offshore. Garment factories have suspended operations, farmland has been submerged, businesses remain closed, and workers cannot reach their jobs because roads are impassable. Economists expect the overall financial losses to reach hundreds of millions of dollars as recovery efforts continue.
